How to choose a blood bag centrifuge

What to check before choosing a refrigerated blood bag centrifuge: capacity per cycle, bag type and rotor, protocols, safety and installation.

MSP-4650 R PLUS refrigerated blood bag centrifuge with the lid open in a component processing room

At a glance

  • Size the centrifuge for your peak volume per cycle, not the daily average. The Presvac range processes 4, 6 or 12 blood bags per cycle.
  • Check that the rotor and buckets fit the double, triple or quadruple bags you use, and plan Buffy Coat adapters if you need them.
  • Stored protocols keep every cycle reproducible: MEMOSOFT V holds 50 programs with 10 acceleration and braking ramps.
  • Plan traceability and installation before you buy: barcode reader, data export, power supply and access route.

Choosing a refrigerated blood bank centrifuge is about the whole workflow, not only maximum speed. These five steps cover what to check before you compare models.

Key figures

  • 4 · 6 · 12 blood bags per cycle across the range
  • 50 programs stored in MEMOSOFT V
  • 10 acceleration and braking ramps
  • < 65 dB noise level

1. Calculate the capacity you need per cycle

Start from the number of units processed per shift and how many cycles you can run. A 4-bag unit saves space and avoids oversizing in lower-volume services. When more units must be processed at once, 6- or 12-bag configurations cut repeated cycles and waiting times.

Table: Capacity by model

  • Model | Bags per cycle | Max. speed | Designed for
  • MSP-4650 R PLUS | 4 | 3,500 RPM | Laboratories and lower-volume centers
  • DP-2065 R PLUS | 6 | 3,500 RPM | Medium-throughput blood banks
  • DP-2065 R 12B | 12 | 4,000 RPM (swinging rotors) | High-volume centers

Presvac tip

Size for your busiest day and expected growth. A centrifuge sized only for today’s average can become a bottleneck as soon as collection increases.

2. Confirm bag and rotor compatibility

The number of positions is only part of the answer. Review the rotor type, the bucket volume and the bags you routinely process. The MSP-4650 R PLUS and DP-2065 R PLUS use swing-out rotors with 1,000 mL buckets; the DP-2065 R 12B takes up to 12 bags per cycle.

The range centrifuges double, triple and quadruple bags to separate:

  • Red blood cell concentrate
  • Platelet-rich plasma
  • Platelet concentrate
  • Cryoprecipitate
  • Buffy coat systems

Note

If your process uses Buffy Coat or other special configurations, define the adapters from the start so the nominal capacity can be fully used.

3. Evaluate protocols and cycle control

Saved programs reduce variation between operators. The MEMOSOFT V panel lets you:

  • Store up to 50 protocols and select them from a graphical display
  • Set speed, temperature, time, acceleration and braking
  • Use 10 programmable ramps to match each procedure
  • Read parameters while the centrifuge is running
  • Restrict access with user groups, user identification and screen lock

Choose based on the protocols your institution has validated. A higher maximum speed does not replace reproducibility and controlled transitions between cycle stages.

4. Prioritize safety and traceability

Table: Safety and traceability features

  • Need | What to look for
  • Operator safety | Lid locking and emergency opening
  • Run protection | Imbalance detection with shutdown, visual and audible alarms
  • Low maintenance | Brushless induction motor, no carbon brushes
  • Traceability | Date, time, method and duration of each cycle; USB export; optional barcode reader

5. Review installation requirements

Check room dimensions, the access route, a 220 V, 50/60 Hz power supply, ambient temperature and ventilation. Leave room for loading, cleaning and operator movement.

Table: Size and weight

  • Model | W × D × H | Weight
  • MSP-4650 R PLUS | 620 × 750 × 930 mm | 147 kg
  • DP-2065 R PLUS | 730 × 880 × 1,010 mm | 207 kg
  • DP-2065 R 12B | 870 × 1,060 × 1,010 mm | 317 kg

Which model fits?

Which one fits

  • MSP-4650 R PLUS Compact, 4 bags per cycle. For laboratories and lower-volume centers.
  • DP-2065 R PLUS 6 bags per cycle. The balance between capacity and footprint for medium-throughput blood banks.
  • DP-2065 R 12B 12 bags per cycle at up to 4,000 RPM (7,500 RPM with the R6A fixed-angle rotor). For high-volume centers.

Frequently asked questions

FAQ

Which blood components can be separated?

Red blood cell concentrate, platelet-rich plasma, platelet concentrate and cryoprecipitate, as well as buffy coat systems, using double, triple or quadruple bags.

Can each cycle be recorded?

Yes. MEMOSOFT V stores the date, time, method and duration of every cycle and exports the data via USB. A barcode reader is available to identify each unit.

Do you provide installation and training?

Yes. Presvac installs the equipment, trains the users and helps plan preventive and corrective maintenance.
